Susan,
I'm
Disappearing
Susan, I’m Disappearing explores the deep, unspoken bond between an elderly Chinese woman, Susan, and the family building she grew up in, which is now being sold.
This 10-minute hybrid documentary is a love letter to the buildings, people, and languages that shaped Sydney’s Chinatown. It pays homage to one of the oldest and most successful Chinese buildings on Dixon Street, Kwong War Chong, and the pioneering woman behind it, Susan Pang.
Susan, I’m Disappearing tells the story of a building at the end of its life. As Susan returns to say goodbye one last time, she is drawn to the presence of a mysterious little girl standing outside who resembles her younger self. This fleeting interaction sparks Susan's own childhood memories in the building, leading us into a moment that would mark a turning point in her life.
Our goal is to reframe the migrant story not through triumph or trauma alone, but through memory, what is carried, what is buried, and what is left behind when a community fades. The story is based on true accounts from Susan herself and other members of the Pang family.
This story is a time capsule for a Chinatown that might not exist tomorrow. With the rapid government-led redevelopment of the precinct, this film aims to preserve the soul of the community - featuring beloved community members, an endangered Cantonese dialect, and historic locations in a true Chinatown story.
